Several Miramichiers gave their tabletop
paper shredders a rest this weekend and turned to some big blades.
The Community Business Development
Corporation together in conjunction with Securit, hosted a free community
shredding day Saturday morning in the Rodd parking lot.
Everyone from small business owners to any
local residents looking to get rid of personal or professional documents were
welcome to bring their paperwork to the Shred-It truck.
CBDC, a not-for-profit agency, has
initiatives like this one going on all over the province this week.
"Small businesses should be aware of
the importance of getting rid of their paperwork," said CBDC general manager
Greg McNulty.
"Especially in this day and age people
need to be concerned about fraud and identity theft and people need to be
conscious about destroying documentation that has there personal information on
it," said Securit sales rep Katherine Martin.
Aside from just paper Martin said the
Shred-It trucks are equipped with blades that can destroy any number of other
items containing personal information, including hard drives and CDs and VHS
tapes. But on days when the public gets an opportunity to bring in their materials
at a community shredding she says they will mostly see paper.
Martin notes it is also an excellent way to
ensure your paper is getting recycled.
Earlier in the morning several people took
advantage of the free shredding, one man bringing 15 boxes of old papers he
wanted destroyed.
"Someone else brought a couple of
plastic bags."
Others took advantage of the free shred to
clean out their house.
Andrew Parker brought two plastic tubs full
of old exams.
"My mother teaches at NBCC, she has to
hold on to the students exams for a certain period of time. I saw the ad in the
paper and I said, here's our chance."
